Seven & I Holdings (via 7-Eleven International) → 7-Eleven Australia
completedJapan's Seven & I Holdings, through its 7-Eleven International (7IN) joint venture business, agreed to acquire 7-Eleven Australia — the master franchisee operating more than 750 convenience stores nationally — from the Withers and Barlow families for A$1.71 billion. The deal was announced 30 November 2023 and completed 1 April 2024.
7IN co-CEOs framed the deal as demonstrating the company's commitment to growing the 7-Eleven brand globally, and said the acquisition would let it enhance the brand in Australia, where it already has a long-standing presence and strong brand recognition, by applying 7-Eleven International's convenience-retailing expertise to store experience, merchandise and fuel offerings.
Family co-owner Russell Withers said it was "the right time" for the founding families to pass the business to new owners to continue building the brand. The Withers and Barlow families had run 7-Eleven Australia as franchisee since the 1970s and initiated a formal sale process in 2023, reportedly initially seeking around A$2 billion before settling on A$1.71 billion.
Not applicable — 7-Eleven Australia was a privately held family business. Seven & I Holdings' Tokyo-listed shares showed no material reaction attributable to this deal, which was small relative to the group's overall market capitalisation.
Coverage framed the deal as consolidating Seven & I's direct control over one of its largest and most successful international 7-Eleven markets, following a similar pattern of the Japanese parent buying out long-standing overseas franchisees/licensees.
